We are confronting child abuse and neglect by loving kids in Strongsville, Ohio! We are honored to be offering children in foster care in Cuyahoga County, an opportunity to come to camp for a week! A week where they feel loved, special, and more then just a kid in foster care. These children see the face of God through our amazing 76 full time volunteers who spend the week loving these children. They experience fishing, swimming, canoeing, high ropes, sports, games, crafts, archery, bible stories, and drama. But the most impact our volunteers make is just listening and hanging out with our campers. When one of your campers was asked what his favorite part of camp was, he said “walking with my counselor.”
The Strongsville United Methodist Church has been privileged to sponsor a Royal Family Kids camp. Our camp began three years ago when we felt God’s nudging to help the abused and neglected children in our county experience His love through RFK camp.
After our first year, one of our campers was adopted and now has a forever home! We have experienced first hand what happens when God leads and WE take action!
Our campers come for free and our camp staff are all volunteers, including our camp director, Sue Puffer, and Assistant Director’s, Mary Boyer and Toni Panovic. The cost to rent a camp along with all the supplies needed is expensive. Along with all the camp activities, each child takes home a memory book filled with pictures of their week at camp. They also experience a birthday party complete with gifts and blow-up slides and jump house. For some, it’s their very first birthday experience.
To make camp happen we raise all our own money, mainly through our annual Auction, which is Aprll 7, 2018, along with personal donations. All this is worth every smile and the joy we see on the campers faces!
RFK camp has a camper-to-counselor ratio of 2:1 with at least 58 additional support staff. Activities are purposefully designed to be non-competitive and non-threatning while allowing children to experience success.
